Adding Artwork To Your New Kitchen? Some Do's And Don'ts

The kitchen is a large part of the modern American home. But when it comes to designing it, the focus is often on materials and colors rather than the decor. Should you expand your perspective on decorating your kitchen? Should you expand it to include artwork?

The answer is yes. Artwork can enhance any kitchen, large or small. To help you find the right ways to incorporate it at home, here are a few important do's and don'ts.

Do Think Outside the Box

When many people think about kitchen art, they envision common 'kitchen' themes, such as food, cooking, fruit, or words. But you aren't limited to these easy choices. Have fun with kitchen art, considering things like photographs, paintings, abstract pieces, multi-media art, or sculptures.

Don't Pick Delicate Objects

The kitchen can be a messy place. Food splatters, grease, humidity, smoke, and food smells will get onto your decorative elements. So avoid expensive artwork or items to which you have a strong sentimental attachment. It doesn't have to be cheap or boring, but it should be something you're okay with possibly losing after a while.

Do Check the Spot First

The aforementioned potential for messes means you should carefully consider the location of any artwork. For example, hanging a picture on a large stove hood can be beautiful. But if you run your hand along that spot, does it feel greasy or wet from the steam? If so, this may not be the best place. Similarly, avoid hanging most things in too much sunlight.

Don't Overload the Counter

Countertops are a natural draw for decorative objects. But be cautious about simply placing things on the counter. They're more likely to get in the way, be knocked over, or get damaged by kitchen work. Instead, hang some shelves above to achieve a similar look with less mess. Or stick with more hanging art rather than counter-based objects.

Do Make It Easy to Clean

Extend the life of your kitchen artwork by choosing items that are easy to maintain. Avoid fabrics, for instance, which can absorb odors and are easily stained. Acrylics, metals, and vinyl can be great choices since you can quickly wipe them down and use different types of degreasers and cleaners.
