If your home lacked all insulation, it would be fairly obvious. And this is really only something you find in very old homes. What is more common is for homes to have some insulation but not enough to do the job effectively. When this is the case, you can hire an insulation company to add more insulation. However, you have to realize your home is under-insulated before you're able to do anything about it. Here are some signs that indicate you could benefit from more insulation.
You hear lots of outside noise when you're inside your home.
Insulation does more than block heat. It also slows down the passing of sound through the walls of your home. If your home always seems noisy, even when the windows and doors are closed, this could point to a lack of insulation. Pay attention to whether there are some rooms where you hear the outdoor noise more clearly than in others. These could be the rooms that are the least insulated; point them out to your insulation contractor.
You feel drafts.
A draft is when there's a pocket of coldness. It may feel like a slight breeze is blowing through that area or like there's a pocket of chillier air that you have to pass through to get into another space. Draftiness can be due to old or leaky windows, but if the drafts are not near the windows, this issue can point to a lack of insulation. Even if only a few areas are drafty, this can really drive up your energy bills, so you will want to talk to an insulation company about making improvements.
There are cold spots on your walls.
The next time it's really cold outside, walk around your home and place your hands on the wall at various spots. Are there some spots that are far colder than others? Maybe a certain wall feels cold, while all of the others feel warmer. The cold spots are likely areas where the insulation is lacking. Maybe that spot was once insulated, but the insulation has become compacted, moist, or otherwise damaged. An insulation contractor can take a closer look and add insulation to the areas where it is needed.
Having some insulation is not always enough; you need adequate insulation. If you notice any of these signs that your home is lacking insulation, talk to a contractor near you about adding more to your home's walls.
